CRITERIA FOR AWARDS

ALL NOMINEES MUST REPRESENT THE NORTHEAST REGION DURING THE YEAR THEY ARE NOMINATED.  A SHORT LETTER DESCRIBING WHY THE NOMINEE SHOULD BE SELECTED MUST ACCOMPANY THE NOMINATION.

AWARD CATEGORIES

SKATER(S) OF THE YEAR

The skater(s) of the year shall be any skater who has contributed outstandingly to the sport of Roller Skating during the year in which he or she has been nominated.  The write up should pertain to the past skating season only.  The recipient of the Skater(s) of the Year will not be eligible for any of the other awards. Anyone who has coached skaters within two years of relevant season is not eligible for this award.

HALL OF FAME (Maximum of 2 awards per year)

ALL nominees should have been or are members of either RSA, SRSTA and/or USARS.    Members shall be defined as persons in the following categories:  Competitors, Non-Competitors, Teachers/Coaches and Operators.

Once a nominee has received this award, they would not be considered in the future as they now have received the most prestige award.

SPECIALTY AWARDS

Specialty Awards are given to outstanding skaters who have received a Gold, Silver or Bronze medal at the national championship in any of the following skating disciplines; Dance, Solo Dance, Figures, Freestyle and Speed in the year he/she has been nominated.   Anyone who has coached skaters within two years of relevant season is not eligible for this award.

ELAINE BREEN MERITORIOUS AWARD

A service award to a person(s) dedicated to the sport of Roller Skating and to the Northeast Region.

BABIEC SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD

A sportsmanship award to a person(s) who has shown outstanding sportsmanship in the year he/she is nominated. Anyone who has coached standard competitive skaters within two years of relevant season is not eligible for this award.

UNCLE CHARLIE SANTORO MEMORIAL YOUTH ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

This award is given to a skater or skaters in the FRESHMAN division or younger who shows great promise to the sport of roller skating.  Recipients of this award need not be National Champions; they may be eligible based on Regional accomplishments.

NANCY DOYLE UP AND COMING AWARD

This award is given annually to an up and coming new skater who has shown the most growth and talent in their first years of skating. Nancy Doyle excelled in coaching the new skater from classes right up to their first competition. Consideration should be given to the improvement and success of the skater as well as their love of the sport.

PARAGON MEMORIAL AWARD

This award is given for those that support the skaters, namely the parents, grandparents or guardians of those skaters.  The age of the child does not matter but must be competing in the current season.  The nominee must have shown support not only for their child but for other skaters as well.  This support can be in cheering them on, making outfits, doing hair, maintaining skating equipment, etc.

COACHES AWARDS

This recognition is for all coaches who have coached a National Gold Medalist in the standard events.  The number of coaches per skater that can receive this recognition is the same as is indicated in the national application where it lists the skater’s coaches’ name (s).  The coaches must be from the Northeast Region.

NOTE:  Deceased members cannot be nominated for any of the above awards.

The above guidelines are subject to change only with a 2/3 majority vote by the NORTHEAST REGION USARS Awards Dinner Committee.  The final decision on all awards shall be made after a thorough screening by the committee with all decisions being at least a 2/3 majority.  The committee will accept all nominations and make a decision based on the criteria whether the skater(s) are eligible.  All nominees must represent the NORTHEAST REGION.

Not all awards, other than the SKATER OF THE YEAR, are awarded every year.

The following awards do not need nominations:

COACHES RECOGNITION AWARD:
This recognition is for all coaches who have coached a National Gold Medalist in the standard events. The number of coaches per skater that can receive this recognition is the same as is indicated in the national application where it lists the skater’s coaches’ name (s). The coaches must be from the Northeast Region.

NATIONAL EMBETTERMENT AWARD:
This award is given to skaters/coaches who have placed first, second or third at the National Championships.
